State Grid Promotes Parallel Gap Technology for Transmission Lines
On August 19, the Operation and Maintenance Department of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) announced the establishment of a joint working group comprising the Operation and Maintenance Department, Infrastructure Construction Department, Safety Supervision Department, National Dispatch Center, and China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI). The group aims to accelerate the promotion and application of parallel gap technology for overhead transmission lines.
The working group will focus on the following key areas: optimizing the technical parameters of parallel gaps; standardizing specifications and models; refining technical guidelines to clarify selection principles, application scope, and installation and acceptance criteria. Additionally, the group will establish reasonable lightning trip-out rate indicators for lines equipped with parallel gaps and rationally adjust patrol requirements for lightning-induced faults, thereby effectively reducing the workload for fault inspections. The pilot application will also be expanded to include more units and transmission lines, gradually extending to all voltage levels of 500 kV and below across provincial power companies. Building upon a thorough review of operational experience, pilot applications will be progressively introduced in infrastructure projects, striving for comprehensive adoption in SGCC's new construction and retrofitting projects. Furthermore, the group will strengthen the refinement, summarization, and promotion of research and pilot outcomes to ensure the continuous and effective installation of parallel gaps.
Parallel gap lightning protection technology utilizes gap devices installed on both sides of the insulator string to intercept lightning strikes and guide power-frequency arcs, preventing the insulators from being scorched by the arc. This technology helps improve the success rate of line reclosing and reduces operation and maintenance (O&M) workloads. It has been widely adopted in Europe, Japan, and other regions. In recent years, with the continuous strengthening of the power grid structure and the large-scale deployment of SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) switchgear and microcomputer protection devices, SGCC is now well-positioned to promote this technology. Since 2010, the Operation and Maintenance Department has organized CEPRI to conduct applied research on parallel gap technology for insulators on 110 kV to 500 kV lines. Pilot applications have been carried out on 118 transmission lines (totaling 2,540 kilometers, ranging from 35 kV to 500 kV) across SGCC Beijing, Jibei, and Zhejiang Electric Power companies. These pilots have proven highly effective in reducing lightning fault rates, protecting insulators, and decreasing the workload for fault inspections.
